There is currently a desire by the Authorities to remove the audit requirement entirely for the majority of incorporated businesses. Although this process has begun, it still has several more years to go. However, it has been confirmed that the audit threshold will be increased to £1m in July 2000 and is expected to be increased to over £4m, to be in line with European levels.

Even when the requirement no longer exists for many companies not to have to undergo an audit, the benefits of an audit certificate can, in many cases, far outweigh the associated costs. Even for the very small organisation, an auditor's certificate can add significantly to the credibility of financial statements or other matters that may be audited.

Indeed, where there is an outside interest in an organisation, such as a club, for example, the committee members may wish to have an audit performed in order to satisfy themselves as to their stewardship of the organisation and the discharge of their duties.
